DBS checks are criminal records checks processed by the Disclosure and Barring Service and it provides details of an individual’s criminal record. DBS checks are essential for anyone who wants to employ a nanny to look after their children. Child-minders have to be automatically checked as part of the Ofsted process. The Disclosure and Barring Service was set up in 2012 and now carries out the function that was performed by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). DBS checks are meant to help prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups such as children. If an employer or an organization, for example, a regulatory body, has concerns that a person has caused harm or poses a future risk of harm to children then they legally must make a referral to the DBS which can result in such a person being barred from working with children.

The DBS searches police records and barred list information, and then issues a DBS certificate to the applicant and employer to help them make an informed recruitment decision. If you don’t have a DBS check its easy to apply online and it’s not as expensive as you might think, costing around £45 – £65. Ofsted require child-minders to hold a current DBS disclosure. A child-minder that is registered and approved by Ofsted she will be able to show her current Ofsted report and DBS document.

A DBS check can find:

  • Whether the applicant is on the Protection of Children Act List and has therefore been banned from working with children in a childcare role.
  • Any criminal convictions within the UK only, including those that would normally be considered ‘spent’ under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1977.
  • Whether the applicant is on ‘List 99’ and therefore banned from teaching.
  • Whether the applicant is subject to a Disqualification Order.
  • Any other information the police consider to be relevant
